NDA Annual Meeting 2005

Hosted by Washoe Medical Center, Reno, NV

Beyond Will Power: The Art & Science of Weight Management
April 29-30, 2005

What a great way to start the weekend, being greeted by Hershey Kisses all over the tables (shhh, we won't tell who ate *5* before Dayle Hayes, MS RD started her presentation on "How to Eat Chocolate and Other Nutrition Secrets for Health and Pleasure". She reminded us to slow down and enjoy our food - which may be why French women do not get fat. Yes, portion control definitely plays a big role (check out the NIH website at http://hin.nhlbi.nih.gov/portion/ for portion distortion slides), she suggested helping your clients find the little changes they can make for the rest of their lives. Dayle was sponsored by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association & Nevada Beef Council. You can find some of her great insights via the wonderful EatRightMontana program of handouts & other nutritional information at http://www.montanadieteticassociation.org/promo.html

What goes well with chocolate? Champagne maybe? Carolyn Prusa from Southern Wine & Spirits imparted us with "The Secret to Pairing Food and Wine" in Remedees Restaurant. Amazing how a bite of Parmesan cheese changes how we taste the Sauvignon Blanc, or that Viognier matches that spicy seafood dish. Everyone has his or her own favorite flavors and next time you are out dining, don't be afraid to ask a wine steward for advice.

After a wonderful buffet lunch and visit with our vendors (thanks so much for your support all year long), Mark Meskin, PhD, RD, FADA led us through "Evaluating Weight Loss Supplement Claims". In conclusion, he provided us with some useful advice if our patients are considering supplementation: 1) Cost verses Efficacy, 2) Probability that increasing intake/status is toxic, and 3) Probability that scientific evidence doesn't apply to humans. He suggests looking at "Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss", "Volumetrics" by Barbara Rolls, and "Eat More, Weight Less" from Dr. Dean Ornish. But most importantly, we should be counting steps, not calories as in "The Step Diet" by Hill, Peters & Jortberg. He pointed us to the free online handout "The 10 Commandments of Weight Loss" from Vicki Adcock, Communicating Food For Health, 2003. http://www.foodandhealth.com/10command.pdf
See a newspaper article about her great team here: http://www.unr.edu/nevadanews/detail.aspx?id=472
Molly Kellogg, MS RD (sponsored by the Dairy Council of Utah/Nevada) encouraged us in "Motivating Patients to Take Control of Their Health". You can find more information at her website www.mollykellogg.com and a Motivational Practice book with discussion at www.motivatehealthyhabits.com.
The 2004-2005 NDA Board would like to thank all the sponsors, vendors, speakers, and all the participants at this years meeting. See you in Las Vegas in 2006.

Of course we all recognized the name Sachiko St. Jeor, PhD, RD, FADA - Professor & Director Nutrition Education and Research Program, University of Nevada School of Medicine and recognized nationally and internationally for her work in nutrition assessment, weight management, and nutrition in medical education. Of course obesity is now the #1 "nutrition" problem in the United States. And she encouraged us to create a new "black bag" of tools for nutrition assessments. How many of us know that we should be measuring waist circumference at the iliac crest? But remember, interaction with physicians and documentation is key to reimbursement. Familiarize yourself with the proper ICD-9-CM codes and CPT codes and include obesity as a comorbidity to the major diagnosis if appropriate. Watch for a new Cutter-St.Jeor REE factor.
