For 53 years, the Nevada Dietetic Association has been providing quality continuing education to the RDs and DTRs of Nevada. This year, we were excited to be hosted by St. Rose Dominican Hospital http://www.strosecares.com/ Siena Campus in Henderson NV.

The NDA Board works hard all year to meet the needs of NDA members, but it was the amazing Bonnie Johnson who put all the pieces in place.

Julie O'Sullivan-Maillet, PhD, Rd, Past-President of the American Dietetic Association (just last year), highlighted the trends and challenges impacting dietetics practice in "Leading the Future of Dietetics". She energetically described a vision of our profession and the work setting looking towards 2017 (the 100th Anniversary of ADA), and pointed us towards strategically activating that vision. Look on the ADA website http://www.eatright.org for more information.
Those trends? You've already seen our population eating out often, seeking more convenience foods (both restaurant take-out and grocery store ready-to-eat), and expanding their taste buds with culinary diversity. But did you know that many other ancillary healthcare professions are requiring advanced degrees for entry level positions? Or in hospitals across the country Registered Dietitians are gaining order writing privledges.

Now that we were thinking about the future, Michele Cowee, RD, CDE, NDA President, led us through the new Professional Development Portfolio process.
Key points: Remember, the self-assessment is for your use only, no one else will be looking at it, or grading it. Include broad-based goals so a number of various topics can be counted for credit. You don't have to meet all the goals you submit. And don't forget that if you achieve an advanced certification (i.e. CDE or CNSD) or are studying for an advanced degree (MS, PhD), make sure those are possible goals. Lastly, holding an elected office in NDA (or any of the DPGs) can count for up to 3 hours per year. For more information about the new re-certification process for your RD or DTR credentials, refer to the CDR website at www.cdrnet.org.
Jan Neubert & Debbie Klein reviewed MNT and assisted participants in completing the applications for Medicare provider numbers.
Marketing nutrition education was presented by Jennifer Anderson, PhD, RD. She recommended we keep our messages simple and focused. This was demonstrated by examples from many different state programs including "Eat 1 More Today" a campaign targeting women aged 25-50 years, encouraging them to start by consuming just one more fruit or vegetable.
She also pointed out the Marketing Mix 4 P's: Product, Price, Place, Promotion. When a school followed this advice, re-positioning a milk vending machine first in a line of soda machines, the result was double the sales of milk. Thank you to the Dairy Council of Utah/Nevada http://www.dairycouncilutnv.org/ for sponsoring this presentation.
Understanding upcoming trends will be important in planning our careers and educational goals. Nevada Beef Council http://www.nevadabeef.org/ sponsored Felicia Busch MPH, RD, FADA, who presented "Food Trends and Their Impact on Nutrition Education and Dietitians". In society we already see time demands in our own lives and those of our clients. Unfortunately, literacy is still a big problem (21% of the US population are functionally illiterate) and despite the increasing trend of obesity, there is decreased access to fresh & reasonably priced food (especially in the mega cities). Speaking of obesity, the statistics are frightening. According to the Department of
Health & Human Services, 58 million Americans are overweight, 40 million are obese, and 3 million are morbidly obese. 63% of children age 5-17 are not active enough for optimal growth. Nutraceuticals & pharmaceuticals are the #1 product sales on the Internet. And for those of us tired of hearing about low carb diets, the good news is that more people are paying attention to food labels. The even better news? This trend will pass (estimates are that they will fade in 2 to 4 years).

Over 60 RDs, DTRs and dietetic students attended the NDA Annual Meeting this year. The NDA Board would like to extend their appreciation to St. Rose Dominican Hospital for sharing their lovely facilities; to Paul Deignan, the Manager Nutrition Services and his staff for preparing and serving the most delicious food you could never have imagined came from a hospital kitchen; and our biggest heartfelt thanks and admiration to Bonnie Johnson for the incredible job she performed by putting this whole event together.
